“I am so often asked, “Does the audience make any difference?” Of course! It is the only reason you bother to be in the theatre, in order that tonight it can be better than last night, and that this audience really will at the end think they have had a marvellous experience, and you have told the author’s story.”
Judi Dench, And Furthermore
The advice I have given to others still haunts me. It sits in the back of my mind and wonders what would have happened if I had not gotten involved.
It is only when we are in a situation that we truly understand those who experienced it before us.
Apologies, Updates and Lent Conclusion
Sorry it’s been so long. I know everyone always says how super busy they’ve been and makes promises to return but I really have been busy and will return soon.
Student Show is always the most hectic and busy time in my year. For the duration of Easter (or spring break) we rehearse from 10am - 10pm, Mon - Fri and then put on a show. It’s intense and it takes over your life. However, it is extremely worth it and rewarding and you create a ridiculously strong bond with all of the people involved.
The weekend after the show is the Torcher Parade, which was one of the best experiences of my life. Over the past few months I have had so many moments that I would classify as “patronus moments” that I am so grateful to everyone around me.
Then the last few weeks of classes and we move into exams. I, luckily, have only one exam this term which is a week today. After that I am finished with second year. Scary stuff. I am halfway through my degree.
So, anyways, to pick up where I left off and conclude the lent saga:
I knew the promise of no make-up was going to get progressively harder but I don’t think I had quite prepared myself for how it would all make me feel. It was all well and good saying no make-up at the beginning and feeling like I was making a point but towards the end I just wanted it back. It was an amazing thing to do and taught me so much about myself and people’s perceptions. I never really managed to become make-up free but I think that’s because I like make-up for the general reason that it’s fun. I do not feel that I personally hide behind make-up because of low self esteem issues; I just enjoy wearing it.
Towards the end I was wearing powder, concealer, mascara and lipstick most days, which I’m not proud of but I learnt a lot. This is still pretty much what I wear on a daily basis now. I don’t look like a barbie all the time and have embraced my subtle flaws. I think I look better now than before. A few days ago a friend came over unexpectedly and I had no make-up on but did not fret about it. I sat and chatted and when we had to leave I put some on like I normally would have done if she had not been there. She even commented that my skin was looking nice so that’s a bonus.
Make-up allows us to accentuate features we like and downplay features we don’t. It’s not there to mask and it’s not strictly necessary but it’s fun. Since lent I have definitely toned down my daily make-up and actually look at myself on a night out and feel I have too much on. I’ll never be one of those girls who is natural all the time but I have learnt a lot from the 40 days I tried to wear less make-up.

Being a fan doesn’t mean you were there from the beginning, it means you are willing to be there until the end.
